Best in Show – Milan 2011
FURNITURE AND PRODUCT INNOVATION FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

The Milan furniture fair which brings together all the best of commercial and creative design activity from around the globe has just finished.  We bring you in the post below our first selection of highlights from the fair.  Trends we noted was an abundance of greenery in almost every location- walls, floors, in furniture, underfoot.  There was also a strong sense of pattern-making, a sculptural mix of unorthodox materials like wicker and plastic together, and a greater use of pattern to form a narrative design on objects.  We will be presenting more of our discoveries soon….watch this space!

The circus-style illuminated signage grouping every collection with it’s title overhead was truly original.

Trompe l’oeil in three-dimensions!  Hay Bale seating by Richard Woods & Sebastian Wrong.  As ever, Established & Son’s show provided a sumptuous and seductive arena for it’s products.  Deeply dark interiors with dramatic spotlights on the products set a theatrical tone.

Vitra’s Copper Foil Lights gave a new take to feature lighting- we have seen copper used so much now it’s refreshing to see something more sculptural and with a sense of hand-madeness to it.

Meteor, a beautiful circular stool embroidered with illustrations by Klaus Haapaniemi & Mia Wallenius.  The accompanying rug is shown below.  It is interesting to see such classic crafts and figurative detailing making a comeback.
